Why this is common here

The reader prefers not to use the Play Store for any reason (data savings, family-shared devices, sideloading policy). The platform’s own website is the right source for this.
When an APK is the wrong path
The APK was forwarded by a chat, SMS, email or social media post. The forwarded file is, in a non-trivial share of cases, a lookalike app, not the platform’s real app.
The APK is hosted on a third-party app store or APK host, not on the platform’s own website. The host cannot verify the file is the platform’s own.
The APK is named something other than the platform’s published name ("rummy-mod.apk", "rummy-premium.apk", "rummy-bonus.apk" are common). The platform does not publish "mod" or "premium" versions; the file is a lookalike.
How to verify an APK before installing
Confirm the source is the platform’s own published website (the URL the platform itself prints on its official communications, not a link in an SMS or email).
Confirm the file name matches the platform’s published name and version number.
Confirm the app, once installed, asks for the permissions described in our app permissions section and nothing more.
Confirm the app, once installed, asks for the same login flow as the platform’s web version, and the same credentials work on both.
If any of the four checks fail, uninstall the app and start the install from the platform’s own published URL. The minute spent re-installing is cheaper than the hours spent recovering from a lookalike.
Setting up a freshly installed APK on a new device
An APK installed from the platform’s own website works the same as a Play Store app once the install is complete. The list below is the first-time setup that this desk suggests, in the order it suggests it.
1. Confirm the source and the file name
Before the install, confirm the URL the APK was downloaded from is the platform’s own published website. Confirm the file name matches the platform’s published name and version. The platform’s own website has a downloads page that names the expected file name and version; a reader who has the downloads page open in another tab is a reader who can compare the two in a few seconds.
2. Allow the install (Android will ask)
Android asks the reader to confirm the install before it runs. The confirmation includes the name of the app, the publisher and the permissions the app is asking for. 3. Open the app and sign in
The freshly installed app opens to a login or registration screen. Use the same credentials as the platform’s web version. The account, the balance and the KYC documents are the same on the app and the web version; a reader who has not yet registered is registering here.
4. Turn off "install from unknown sources" after the install
Android turns on the "install from unknown sources" permission to allow the APK install. After the install is complete, turn the permission off. The setting is usually in Settings > Security > Install unknown apps. Leaving the setting on is, in our reading, an avoidable risk; a phone that allows installs from any source is a phone on which a forwarded file can install a lookalike app without further confirmation.
Updating an APK installed outside the Play Store
An APK installed from the platform’s own website does not update through the Google Play Store. The platform’s own update path is the one to use. The list below is the order this desk suggests.
1. Open the app and check for an in-app update prompt
Most platforms prompt the reader from inside the app when a new version is available. The prompt is the fastest signal that an update is published. Tap the prompt; the app downloads the new APK from the platform’s own website and installs it on top of the existing install.
2. Check the platform’s own downloads page
If the in-app prompt does not appear (because the app is on an older version, or because the platform’s update flow is not in-app), check the platform’s own downloads page. The downloads page names the current version and the file name. Compare the version on the page to the version in the app’s settings; if the page’s version is newer, download the new APK and install it on top of the existing install.
3. Uninstall and reinstall only as a last resort
Uninstalling and reinstalling is the last resort, not the first. The step clears the locally stored data, which forces the reader to log in again. The step is also the moment at which a hostile actor’s forwarded APK can replace the platform’s real APK on a reader’s device, which is why the step is best done only when the reader is in front of the platform’s own downloads page.
What the APK does not do
The platform’s APK is, in most respects, the same product as the Play Store app. A short list of what the APK does not do, and why a reader who expects these things to be present is a reader who will be disappointed.
The APK does not auto-update through the Play Store
An APK installed from the platform’s own website does not receive updates through the Google Play Store. The APK does not get the Play Store’s review process

The APK does not bypass the platform’s own KYC
